Examining Whiteness
When white people show up in racial justice spaces, we often wonder what we can do. The Movement for Black Lives has clearly answered us: we can talk to other white people about racism -- their racism as well as our own. That's what Examining Whiteness is about.
In a spiritually supportive space, this class is intended to foster a deeper understanding of issues that are essential to developing a white anti-racist identity. As we strive to do this, we will deeply examine whiteness on personal and structural levels. Since this is intellectual, emotional, and spiritual work, we all agree to approach it in good faith with an understanding that in discomfort, insight and growth can happen.
To guide us, we will use texts prepared by the Rev. Doctor William Gardiner, which are available to Unitarian Universalists through UUA, as well as readings from other Unitarian Universalist ministers, journalists, historians, and cultural critics. These readings are specifically addressed to white people interested in transforming their whiteness.
The class is divided into the following sections:
- The History of White Supremacy in the United States
- White Power and Privilege
- The Emotional Lives of White People
- Racial Identity Journey
- Developing a Positive White Identity
