Many of you may know Chuck Warpekowkis formerly of ICPJ and now one of the
program directors of
Michigan Collaboration to End Mass Incarceration (Mi-Cemi). Please see
his flyers and information about the
event. Many of our wonderful criminal justice reform organizations will be
there I hope some of you
might be able to come. But for now I would like to know if we'd be willing
to be one of the
endorse the event. It would mean just putting our logo onto the flyer and
I would then make sure
it gets into the newsletter of UUAA. And Danny Jones who is another of the
coordinators of Mi-Cemi
will be coming to our congregation on October 17th to speak at a forum ....
more on that later.
Do you vote yes/no to endorse?
Carolyn

“People say, what is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we
must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time. A pebble cast into a
pond causes ripples that spread in all directions. Each one of our
thoughts, words and deeds is like that. No one has a right to sit down and
feel hopeless. There is too much work to do.” *Dorothy Day*

Carolyn,
I will save you the back story on why getting a revised flyer took so
long--you've been in enough coalition work to understand :)
Anyway, here's the details of the Oct 14 rally. Would love to have LWV,
the UUs, FORJ, etc endorse.
-Chuck
There's a rally planned for Lansing on October 14, and I'm hoping your
organization is willing to endorse and help promote it.
*When and Where is the Rally? *The rally is at the Michigan Capitol
Building on the East Lawn on Thursday, October 14, 12-3pm.
*What is the rally for? *The rally is to support 2nd look
legislation (details here from The Sentencing Project
<https://www.sentencingproject.org/publications/a-second-look-at-injustice/>).
Prison sentences in Michigan have gotten longer and longer, even though
even the Department of Justice
<https://nij.ojp.gov/topics/articles/five-things-about-deterrence> says
these policies don't deter crime.
Second Look legislation creates a pathway for sentencing judges to review
cases to evaluate if people who have been in prison for 10 years or longer
are a danger to the community.
*How do I endorse?* Endorse the rally at https://bit.ly/RallyEndorsement .
Endorsing organizations are also welcome to table at the event--just let us
know you're coming on the form and bring your own table.
*Who is organizing the rally?* The rally is organized by a broad coalition
of state and national organizations, including:
- American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)
- Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice
- Metropolitan Organizing Strategy Enabling Strength (MOSES)
- Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration (MI-CEMI)
- Michigan Conference United Church of Christ
- Michigan Justice Advocacy (MJA)
- Nation Outside (NO)
- National Lifers of America, Inc. (NLA)
- Northridge Church
- Notes from the Village
- Open MI Door
- Safe & Just Michigan (SJM)
- State Appellate Defenders Office (SADO)
- The Adolescent Redemption Project (TARP)
- The Sentencing Project
- Voting Access for All Coalition (VAAC)
