Hi All -- This is the email from Natalie that I promised you, with attached
notes from the organizing meeting she led last Friday afternoon. You don't
need to plow through the whole thread, but *I recommend you read N's
follow-up email immediately below, and the notes attached. *It will give
you a really good view of what's happening, both why the advocacy is needed
and what's underway/in planning, so you can join/support. I'm open to
questions, and/or I can refer them to Natalie.

Thanks and love --ML

Dear all.
Thank you for a good meeting on Friday. I appreciate you all so much. Notes
are attached to this email.

You've all seen the flier for the demo on Sunday. Please continue to
circulate. I have some language to use in the body of this email below when
you are reaching out to people if you want to use for context.

The reaching out to Irwin to ask for an unannounced visit crew is emailing
back and forth. I hope we can send an email to him and Felicia Brabec (and
Eli Savit) by Wednesday morning.

Shawanna and Trisché, please resend flier with any new logos when you can.
AFSC is on it as a ghost (ha) but will promote (this is political posturing
on our part fyi). Also, do you want to meet before Sunday to touch base and
have folks carry loads-- there are many hands on deck here!!!?

Language for invite to potential partners in organizations (esp. public
health). It is long so cut and tweak away!!!

For the demo, there is a good letter to the head medical person for the
state circulating we may want to direct folks to it. It is at the bottom of
this email for your review. I will also set up a google drive with all of
the historical documents that I have on overcrowding etc. at the women's
prison...

Dear....

*Conditions at Michigan's one prison for women have been problematic for
years, before COVID. Overcrowding, lack of access to mental health and
adequate medical services, lack of programming, major staffing shortages
which lead to fatigue and outright abuse, antiquated buildings, sewage &
heating and cooling systems, and more have plagued Women's Huron Valley for
years. *

*COVID 19 has exacerbated existing problems at the Valley. Women are forced
to live in overcrowded conditions that lead to excessive exposure to COVID
19. The MDOC has provided thin cotton masks that are ill fitting throughout
the pandemic. Further staff who work in crowded areas like chow halls and
program buildings have not been mandated to be vaccinated or to be tested
daily, every two days, or even weekly. This has led to an immense surge.
The latest outbreak at the Valley came in through civilian chow hall
staff. *

*Throughout the last two years, the women have had little access to big
yard or the field house--they must choose one option just one time a week
(except for people who have cross cohort jobs--they get big yard twice).
There are 23 seats in a dayroom and there are between 155 and 180 women in
each unit (on the westside). Women on the west side are double bunked in 10
by 10 spaces with a toilet and sink in the room and one desk and one chair.
There is no room for movement. These cells were built as single cells. They
should not be double bunked during non-pandemic times, let alone in
pandemic times.*

*The MDOC and the governor's office will continue to blame staffing
shortages and the lack of control of who they are forced to cage as the
main problems contributing to this current crisis. *

*We argue that the governor could do more than she is doing to relieve the
overcrowded conditions at the Valley. She could listen to social science,
public health, and criminology research--the majority of women in prison
have been subjected to serious traumas in their histories and, after
serving long periods of time, pose NO risk to the community. In all
actuality, these women could serve as mentors to struggling communities and
young people. Their mitigating circumstances are profoundly unique and
immense, and the governor should call in experts, outside of the MDOC
talking heads, to explore ways forward to address the chronically inhumane
conditions and gender specific problems & realities of WHV. She should be
looking towards reducing the women's prison population by half and
eventually relying on alternatives to imprisonment for the harms caused by
women in our communities. *

*A group of outraged and invested community members, loved ones, and
formerly incarcerated people call on you to join us in the work to raise
awareness on the horrific conditions at the Valley and to work to get our
governor and the institutions beholden to her authority, MDOC and MDHHS, to
comprehensively address the problems that we are raising through more
avenues to freedom and return to safe families and communities of love and
care.*

Peace and love,
Natalie

*Subject:* Organizing around the Valley together!!

Dear Jennifer. Thanks for reaching out. Happy New Year to everyone on this
thread:)
I'm copying lots of folks who I know are in the work already or who are
interested in it. Hi everyone. Please loop in others if they are missing.

After talking to many of you on this email individually over the last few
days, it made good sense to try to gather us together. And, then Jennifer
sent out the prison radio email... So, this is a call for all of us to get
on the horn/zoom together with a solid agenda and move forward as soon as
we can and share the workload to help the people we love and fight for at
the Valley. *If you are interested in organizing around this all more,
please let me know what time works best on Friday, January 7
3:00est/4:00est/5:00est; I'll send a zoom link or more days/ times if none
of these work.*

We have been receiving many complaints from WHV and been working diligently
to get issues like lack of hot water in quarantine resolved quickly. We've
been in regular contact with many legislators and folks who can get things
fixed quickly in MDOC....(not perfect, but damage and chaos control--even
though they had two years to get their game in order).

I think you are aware that some folks held a demonstration at the prison on
Sunday. Throughout the pandemic there have been various demos at the valley
to try to raise awareness and join in solidarity with the people trapped
there.

Senator Irwin got Senator McBroom to hold an oversight committee hearing
specifically on the women's prison next Thursday and we are hopeful that
this will pressure the director and the governor to do better. And get more
press. The staffing shortage issue existed before COVID and this and so
much more are reasons why we must be creative about messaging and
strategies to address these problems long term. Let people go--and
eventually close the valley.

I am hopeful that we can all work together to hear from women inside about
what they need and want in terms of actions to move forward and develop
cohesive demands (some of these have already been developed and continually
made) that are part of larger strategies to get people free in MI.

Also, Senator Geiss has been working to get a community oversight committee
at the women's prison for three years now. It is SB 487; it is active and
needs a hearing in Senate Judiciary. This committee would have power to go
inside the valley, bring intel back out, and make recommendations for
change while holding the MDOC accountable...

AFSC is also working on a community demand sign on letter to governor
Whitmer that I am hopeful can get a lot of traction among orgs and
individuals--this is not Valley specific but will highlight the Valley. It
is a depopulation focused letter--the governor needs to let more people
out, period. We did this at the beginning of the pandemic and had nearly
1,500 sign ons and 100 orgs; plus there was individual pressure from orgs
like SADO and the ACLU and DJC... and she listened on jails a little, but
not prisons.

Peace and love,
Natalie
