Zero Waste News

We’ve made good progress in our zero waste efforts—each week we collect a large amount of organic matter as compostables, sending fewer bags of trash to the landfill.

Signage on the Compost bins is being updated to make the process user friendly and easier on everyone!

  • Note that the juice cups we use are not plastic, they are BPI-certified and accepted by our compostables contractor, My Green Michigan (MGM).
  • BPI certification means a product has gone through a rigorous testing process by the Biodegradable Products Institute and will become compost with the methods used at MGM.
  • Ever wonder how the waste-to-compost process happens?  Watch this video to see our system in action!

Going forward, all non-reusable products being used in the social hall should be compostable, including plates, napkins, and cups.

  • Groups serving food from Social Hall tables should adopt this practice as well.

Remember, 2024 is Year Zero at UUAA! Together, let’s continue to work towards our zero waste goal! To get more involved, contact ZeroWasteInfo@uuaa.org.
