The 2023-24 Annual Meeting was held on Sunday, June 2nd, 2024 over Zoom.

Meeting Materials

Election of Officers: The slate of Board and Leadership Development Team members was elected by those attending the annual meeting. The new officers are:

Board of Trustees

Vice President: Kyle Pellar Kosbar

I have been a member of UUAA for 26 years (and a UU for about 30 years). This past year I have been on the Board of Trustees as a member at large. I have also continued as a Spiritual Growth and Development (SGD) teacher, something I have been doing for the past 17 years. I have also been the parent of two children going through the SGD program, served on the SGD committee for the past three years, and on Reverend Cassandra’s Ministerial Advisory and Support Team.

Outside of UUAA, I am electrical engineer, working for an automotive supplier and spend time puttering in my yard and walking my dogs.

I am interested in continuing to serve the congregation, and supporting our president with the Board’s functions

Secretary: Joe Libin

I would like to present myself as a returning candidate for the position of Secretary to the UUAA Board of Trustees.  As a member of UUAA since 2019, I have greatly enjoyed serving the congregation and growing my connections with new friends and church colleagues. I currently serve as Secretary to the Board, as well as a member of the Lay Worship Leaders group. I serve on the Jackson Social Welfare Fund committee and the Music Ambassadors. After 2 years of serving the Board and the congregation as your Secretary, I am confident in my ability to fulfill the requirements of this position while bringing new ideas and energy to the Board.  As a professional Tech Support person, I am very comfortable with Google Docs and Zoom. I am passionate about helping us move into the future with digital record keeping and sharing of documents. As the Secretary to the Board, I will ensure that all communications are timely and clear, succinct and stored correctly. I have learned a lot about the Board and the role of the Trustees, and I would be honored to continue to serve our congregation in this position.

Member at Large: Jeff Poliner

I am returning for a second term as a member-at-large of the Board of Trustees. I have been an active member of the UUAA community since moving to Ann Arbor in 1996. Shortly after joining, I participated in the 20s/30s group and I have maintained many friendships from that group. I helped form the 2nd Men’s Circle which continues to meet regularly. I also served on the Green Sanctuary committee from 2000-2004 and was a co-chair who played a pivotal role in obtaining the Green Sanctuary certification from the UUA.

I have also been very involved in the religious education program, having taught almost every RE/SGD level class from preschool to my current role as a YRUU advisor. I served on the committee previously known as the RE Advisory Committee. I have been on the Nominating Committee (now Leadership Development Team), the Auction committee, helped plan Men’s Retreats and Men’s Dinners, and served a term on the Men’s Council.

Outside of the congregation, I am an engineer, currently working for a manufacturer of medical devices based in Kalamazoo. I enjoy cycling, cross-country skiing, reading, cooking, and playing board games and euchre, and spending time with my wife Helena, who is still relatively new to UUAA.
I am honored to be nominated for a second term on the Board of Trustees.

Member at Large: Kate VanHorn (she/her)

I have lived in Ann Arbor since 2002 and have been a regular UUAA attendee since 2008.  I have spent much of my time at the UUAA with the Youth Spiritual Growth & Development groups starting in the nursery, later facilitating 8th grade OWL, Coming of Age, and serving the Youth in YRUU. In addition, I supported “Examining Whiteness” workshops as a participant & facilitator.

I attend UUAA with my two children, ages 14 & 16. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Gender & Women’s Studies and a Master’s of Business Administration, both from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  My professional life has included founding and running a non-profit childcare organization, consulting non-profit governance boards, small business owners, and occasionally painting scenery at local theaters.

Member at Large: Pete Mooney

I’ve been attending the congregation since 2001 when my wife Tricia and I went on what we call our “church crawl” following 9-11. After visiting several local churches, we agreed that UUAA was the place for us. In the ensuing 20-plus years, I have served on the Program Council, the Leadership Development Team, and a senior minister’s committee to develop staff job descriptions. I have also helped plan our annual auction for over a decade. I’ve found at UUAA a spiritual home, and a welcoming community.

Outside of the church, I have been involved for many years with the Michigan Daily and other publications at the University of Michigan, serving recently as chair of the University’s Board for Student Publications. In the world of athletics, I have a passing interest in Michigan football (my volunteer fact checker Tricia Mooney suggests, with some merit, that a more accurate description would be that I have a “fanatical obsession with Michigan football”), and play in an adult hockey league. In my professional life, I practice law with a small firm where my work involves bankruptcy, tax and general business counseling.

Leadership Development Team

Kevin Werner

I am an EMU Alumni, a dedicated activist at both the TransMen Outreach for Transgender Michigan, and co-hosts The Trans Narrative Podcast, talking with terrific trans people around the world. Working at The Dispute Resolution Center, I help people find communication to get through confrontation. In my free time, I am working on bringing Stonewall The Musical (so LGBTQIA+ people have our story told) from the page to the stage and screen with other crafty collaborators, and enjoy singing with UUAA Chalice Singers and serving as part of the Lay Worship Leader team at UUAA.

Tim Richards

I was born in Maine and grew up in New Hampshire.  I have lived in Ann Arbor most of the past 52 years. Prior to coming to Ann Arbor, I served in the U.S. Army (1968-1972) with stints in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam.  I am a retired librarian.  During my career I served in various capacities at the University of Michigan Library here in Ann Arbor, as Director of the Jean & Alexander Heard Library and the Science & Engineering Library at Vanderbilt University and as Director of the Mardigian Library at the University of Michigan-Dearborn for about 22 years.

My wife, Connie McGuire, and I have been members of this congregation since 1989. Our two adult daughters participated in RE through the Coming-of-Age Program.  I have served in numerous volunteer roles over the years, including: caregiver in the Nursery, member of the Architectural Design Committee, the Audio Committee, the Model and Governance Task Force, the Stewardship Committee, the Personnel Committee, the Governance Advisory Team, co-Chair of the successful 2013 Comprehensive Capital Campaign and as YRUU Advisor. I also served as Vice President and then President of the Board of Trustees. In fact, I was serving as President in 2008 when the Board of Trustees commissioned the Leadership Development Team.   I am currently serving as a member of the congregation’s Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression Coordinating Team. I am a bit of a rare bird here in the Midwest in that I am a 6th generation Unitarian (maybe 7th, depending on your definition of Unitarian). One of my ancestors, Arthur Buckminster Fuller, was a Unitarian minister who served churches in Manchester, New Hampshire, Boston (New North Church) and Watertown, Massachusetts in the 1840’s through the 1850’s before he was killed during the Civil War at the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862.  Our President’s Chalice, created by Ingrid Gunderson,  is named after him.

New Board-Appointed LDT Member (not part of the slate)

I am Kristin LeSueur and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to serve our community on the Leadership Development Team (LDT). For the past several years, I have been serving as one of the Music Ambassadors and it has been a fulfilling and rewarding experience. I have been a member of the Chalice Singers Adult  choir since January of 2011 and relish the chance to help enrich our worship services with music. I am looking forward to deepening my roots in our beloved community and helping it grow.
