Join the Food Justice Team Volunteering at Food Gatherers
Saturday, September 5, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort during September, is dedicated to ending hunger in the US. In support of this important goal, the Food Justice Team is offering you a way to make a difference in the fight against hunger in our local community!
Food insecurity in Washtenaw County now impacts 14% of our neighbors. This means that one in seven residents, including more than 9,600 children, lacks reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food for a healthy lifestyle. In addition, changes to SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) in recent federal legislation threaten to create greater barriers for people who are food insecure.
Food Gatherers, a local nonprofit food bank and food rescue program, supports a network of more than 140 community partners in Washtenaw County with free and low-cost food. They rely on volunteers to sort canned goods and fresh produce, repackage bulk foods, and pack boxes with pre-selected items for distribution.
The Food Justice Team has arranged for UUAA to provide up to 25 volunteers at the Food Gatherers warehouse, located in NE Ann Arbor, on Saturday, September 5, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. This opportunity is open to ages eight and above.
Please let us know at foodjustice@uuaa.org by Friday, August 28, if you’d like to participate, or if you have any questions.
