ZOOM – Book Talk: Becoming Ms. Burton

April 10 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Becoming Ms. Burton by Susan Burton and Cari Lynn From prison to recovery to leading the fight for incarcerated women. The book explores the intersectionality of poverty, drugs, incarceration and housing in a memoir by survivor, Susan Burton. Growing up in a single parent household, Susan was driven to do unthinkable things to help her family which lead her to drugs and in and out of incarceration for 15 years. Constantly questioning why she wasn’t getting the rehabilitation and counseling white prisoners were getting, she vowed to do better for others. Upon release, she started A New Way of Life – providing housing and support services for female returning citizens and becoming a major advocate for prison reform in California. Through her strong will and determination, Burton has proven that former prisoners can offer real value to the community and should be given the opportunities to do so.
