Food Justice: Free School Lunches in Michigan
This Summer, Michigan lawmakers approved funding for free breakfast and lunches for all public school students, pre-K through high school. Besides helping families, both financially and by saving time spent prepping meals, the program is tied to improving academic success. Many children in the state were going to school hungry and it’s difficult to learn on an empty stomach. Studies show that good nutrition leads to stronger classroom results. Local farmers will also benefit, as the program utilizes fresh Michigan-made produce. Read more here.
