Green Corner: Toilet Paper
Toilet paper has a big carbon footprint. Eighty percent (80%) of TP is made from virgin forests, mostly in Canada. When boreal forests are logged, carbon is released, plus the missing forests no longer absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Deforestation accounts for 25% of human-caused greenhouse gases.
What to do? Buy toilet paper made of 100% recycled materials or bamboo. It’s not that expensive and it makes a difference. Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s have the best products (make sure you pick the 100% recycled ones.) Click here to find your brand on this sustainability scorecard.
Also, that plastic wrapping can be recycled at Kroger, Meijer, and other store drop-offs for plastic shopping bags and “soft plastic.”
