Help Sponsor an LGBT Refugee

UUAA’s Kaleidoscope group is looking for people to form a refugee sponsorship group. The recent election has created a time pressure to form a group and complete an application by the end of November. To learn more, please send an email to lgbtrefugee@uuaa.org.

Quick facts:

• The US receives over 14,000 requests from LGBT refugees a year
• There are refugees who are approved to come to the US but can’t immigrate until they have a sponsor
• A minimum of 5 people are needed to sponsor a refugee
• Time commitment: 90 days (the first 90 days in the US)
• Financial commitment: None
• Core responsibilities: Assistance in signing up for public services, such as Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and refugee financial assistance program. Support finding a job and housing, connecting with the local community, and navigating a new culture.
