Happy Birthday to “Us?” Spiritual Reflections on the U.S.’ 250th Birthday
This weekend our nation honors its 250th birthday, in a time when the drive to simplify and glorify the American story is powerfully all around us. While there is much in the American spirit worth honoring and celebrating, attempts at glorification of our culture or history downplay important aspects of who/what our nation is or has been. As Unitarian Universalists, what does it mean to spiritually hold such nuance and complexity, even when it’s hard, even when the larger societal “we” finds such complexity unsettling and/or undesirable? What might help us stay aware and present for all that spiritually and ethically needs us, as Unitarian Universalists?
