Performance: The First Jew in Canada
Saturday, March 29, 7:00pm, Phifer Sanctuary
The First Jew in Canada is a storytelling event mapping the life of Jacques LaFargue, a trans Jewish historical figure whose existence challenges our perceptions of history and identity. Through the lens of nine verifiable facts, this show weaves the historical records of Jacques LaFargue with the personal account of narrator S. Bear Bergman, a trans Jewish man whose life mirrors Jacques’ in profound ways. From daring adventure to startling truth, each fact becomes a gateway to exploring broader themes of identity, history, and the desire to be seen.
S. Bear Bergman is an author, theatrical performer, and storyteller and the co-founder of Flamingo Rampant, an independent publisher of diversity and social justice–focused children’s picture books. Bergman focuses on making trans cultural competency interventions accessible and navigating the joys and challenges of parenting, including the omnipresent hazard of his children’s Lego pieces.
